Gilt Edge Alpacas specialises in high quality alpacas, bred from a gene-pool including some of the most influential animals in Australasia. We started breeding alpacas with a herd of average quality females. In the first year we invested heavily in really good quality females that we sourced from Australia and NZ. Our association with Forestglen Alpaca stud in NSW has been very important in lifting the quality of our herd. We have been lucky enough to purchase four fine male alpacas, three from Forestglen and one from Timbertop alpacas in Victoria. We created the new herd of "Gilt Edge Alpacas" to be a place where our very best animals are registered. The best dams, mated to our top sires will produce our best offspring.  As the progeny from our original purchases reach a certain standard, they too will be transferred to the Gilt Edge herd. Gilt Edge Alpacas come with an assurance of quality achieved by breeding only the best with the best.  We are currently building up our core herd of breeding females but occasionally we have female alpacas for sale as well as pet wethers and herdsires for sale. Our Females for sale are as pregnant females (two in one package) or as a pregnant female with a cria at foot (three in one package) Our Stud Males are offered for mobile-mating within a 60 km radius of Hastings. 'On Farm' mating always available. In July 2005 we were fortunate enough to be able to bring the first alpacas from the widely respected 'Forestglen Alpaca Stud, NSW, Australia' into New Zealand. Forestglen Rameses joins our herd with a long list of high profile show successes within Australia. He is a son of Shanbrooke Accoyo Rasputin and Forestglen Queen of Sheba and will add new genetics to the sire services that we can offer. Our newest additions are  Forestglen Salvador, a son of Forestglen Maestro and Flying Colours Momentum, a son of NWA Ruffo.  We look forward to their progeny in coming years.

Our Mission is to produce fine fleeced, healthy and well conformed alpacas who are capable of passing on genetic improvement to their progeny. We aim to utilise the Across-Herd-Genetic breeding program (AGE) to maximise the improvement in our herd which already contains a number of outstanding breeding lines within our alpaca breeding stock.

Knowledge is the key to successful breeding practices.

To our customers we offer excellent after sales service along with a wealth of alpaca information.

We are Peter and Sarah Busby. We moved to New Zealand from the UK in July 2003 with the intention of raising alpacas on our 2 acre lifestyle block. Within a short space of time our herd has increased to 40 and we have moved to a 50 acre alpaca farm. Peter has been a farmer all his life in the UK and Sarah was a research scientist at Oxford University studying the internal connections between brain cells. Our skills complement each other very well, Peter has a large knowledge base regarding animal husbandry and Sarah's research science background insures that breeding, genetics and anything 'theoretical' is thoroughly investigated before a decision is made. Sarah keeps busy by sitting on the AANZ National Council, chairs the Mediation and Arbitration sub-committee  is secretary to the Breed Development sub-committee and is a member of the AANZ registry working group. She has recently qualified as an  alpaca fleece judge.
